Understanding workout calories and METs

Workout calorie estimates provide a practical way to understand the approximate energy used during physical activity. This calculator uses body weight, workout duration, activity type and MET values to produce an estimate rather than a direct measurement.

What are METs?

MET stands for metabolic equivalent of task. A MET compares the energy cost of an activity with the energy used while resting. A higher MET generally indicates a more demanding activity and a greater estimated calorie expenditure per minute.

How are workout calories estimated?

The estimate combines the selected activity’s MET value with body weight and the length of the workout. In general, a longer session, greater body weight or higher-intensity activity produces a higher calculated result. The calculator uses activity data from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities.

Why calorie-burn estimates vary

Two people can complete the same workout and use different amounts of energy. Differences in fitness, body composition, age, movement efficiency, technique, rest periods, environmental conditions and actual exercise intensity can all affect energy expenditure.

How body weight affects estimated calorie expenditure

Body weight is one of the inputs in the estimate. When the activity, intensity and duration are held constant, a heavier person will generally receive a higher estimated calorie expenditure because moving more body mass requires more energy. This is a mathematical estimate, not a measure of individual metabolism.

Walking vs running calorie expenditure

Running usually has a higher MET value than walking at a comfortable pace, so it generally produces a higher estimated calorie burn in the same amount of time. Walking uphill or at a very brisk pace can increase intensity, while running speed, terrain and breaks can change the comparison.

Strength training calorie expenditure

Strength-training estimates depend heavily on the session structure. Continuous circuits with short rests may use more energy per minute than a session with longer rests between sets. Exercise selection, load, pace and the amount of active time all influence the estimate.

HIIT and calorie expenditure

High-intensity interval training alternates challenging work periods with recovery. Its estimated calorie expenditure can be relatively high, but the result depends on the work-to-rest ratio, exercise selection, effort level and total session duration. A short HIIT workout is not automatically equivalent to a longer steady-state workout.

Yoga and calorie expenditure

Yoga calorie expenditure varies by style and pace. Gentle, restorative and meditation-focused sessions generally have lower intensity, while faster or more physically demanding styles may have higher MET values. Duration and the amount of continuous movement also matter.

Workout calories vs daily calorie needs

Workout calories represent estimated energy used during a particular exercise session. Daily calorie needs are broader and include resting energy expenditure, everyday movement, digestion and exercise across the entire day. Workout calories should therefore be viewed as one part of overall energy needs, not as a complete daily target.

FAQs

Are workout calorie results exact?

No. The result is an estimate based on standardized activity data and the information entered. It may differ from actual energy expenditure.

Does workout intensity affect the result?

Yes. Intensity is reflected through the selected activity and its MET value. A more vigorous version of an activity generally has a higher estimated energy cost.

Should I eat back all workout calories?

Not necessarily. The calculator is an educational estimate, and individual nutrition needs vary. Consider your overall goals and seek professional guidance for personalized advice.
